Top 10 Tips for a successful application

Top 10 Tips for a successful application

Here are our top 10 tips for applying for funding from the Study Melbourne Inclusion Program. Following this advice will give your funding application the best possible chance of success.

  1. Read the program guidelines and confirm you are eligible before you apply
In the past, we have received applications only to discover that the applicant, or the activity they are proposing, does not meet the specific funding criteria for this program.

Only fill out an application if your organisation and activity meet eligibility criteria.

Check the program guidelines to find out if your organisation and the proposed activity are eligible for funding under this program.

  1. Speak with someone from the team
If you have checked the eligibility criteria and are still uncertain about whether your organisation or proposed activity would qualify for funding, speak with a member of the Study Melbourne Inclusion Program team.

Even if you have confirmed your eligibility, we recommend contacting the program team to discuss your proposed activity before completing your application.

You can email the program team at Make it clear in the email’s subject line that your enquiry is about Study Melbourne Inclusion Program. Provide a phone number so a team member can call you back.

  1. Address the aims of the Program
Read the program’s application guidelines to find out the specific aims of the program and make sure the activity you are seeking funding for will help to address some or all of these aims.

Make sure you can clearly explain in your application how and why your activity will address the program’s aims and provide supporting evidence where available.

  1. Involve international students
The Study Melbourne Inclusion Program focuses on supporting the wellbeing of international students studying at Victorian based higher education institutions. It is therefore critical that applicants demonstrate to us that they are committed to giving international students genuine opportunities to contribute and participate in their proposed activity. You need to explain how you intend to do this. If your proposal involves working closely with a student group or organisation, you must provide written evidence of this relationship.
  2. Respond to all funding criteria and questions
Read the application guidelines and make sure your application clearly responds to the ‘must’ requirements in those guidelines.

Where possible, explain how your proposed activity will also achieve other positive outcomes that support the wellbeing of international students in Victoria, as mentioned in the guidelines.

  1. Explain the ‘what, why, who, when, where and how’
When describing your proposed activity in the Application Form, make sure you clearly explain:

what will be delivered – clearly define the scope of the activity you are seeking funding for and list the number of events, sessions, products and/or services to be delivered.
why the proposed activity and the approach you are taking will be effective in helping to improve the wellbeing of international students, and which wellbeing issues will be addressed.
who will be involved in delivering the activity. This includes explaining the roles and intended contributions from any supporting or partner organisations.
who the proposed activity will reach, including the number and type of international students likely to participate.
when and where the activity will be delivered.
how the activity will be delivered. For example, how the activity will be coordinated, how you will plan for and manage risks, and how you will provide appropriate insurance cover.
how you intend to involve international students in planning, delivering and/or reviewing the activity.

  1. Don’t rely solely on the program funding
All applications for Study Melbourne Inclusion Program funding will be expected to provide a minimum co-contribution that contributes to at least half of the value of the funding being applied for. However, we encourage you to work with other organisations to maximise additional cash or in-kind support for your proposed activity.

You will be required to itemise all additional support in your application.

  1. Provide sufficient supporting material
The quality of the information you provide in supporting documents is extremely important.

If you are applying for more than $50,000 in funding, you must provide your organisation’s financial reports for the last three financial years.

Similarly, you must provide written evidence of your relationship with partner organisations to deliver the proposed activity and what they have committed to.

Think about what other relevant supporting information you can provide that will strengthen your application and give the assessment panel confidence in your proposed activity and your ability to follow through if funding is approved.

9. Pay attention to the detail in your application

Suppose your application contains vague or insufficient information, budget figures or numbers that don’t add up when checked, typos, spelling mistakes and bad grammar. In that case, this will significantly reduce the impact the application has on our assessment panel. It may even be rejected before it reaches the assessment panel.

Make sure you respond to all the sections and questions in the online Application Form. Complete the Budget and Expenditure Forecast spreadsheets and double-check that the figures and calculations are correct.

Cross-check between the Application Form and your supporting documents to ensure consistent content. Label all supporting documents and cross-reference them with your application form’s content.

Finally, give yourself enough time to re-read the application to pick up any mistakes or gaps in content. Ask one or two colleagues to read the application and supporting material. A fresh set of eyes may pick up issues that the writer does not see.

10. Get your application in early

Plan so you can submit your application before the closing date. Late applications will not be accepted once each funding round has closed.

If possible, submit your application well before the closing date. This gives us time to review your proposal and get back to you with any questions or suggestions while there is still time to update and re-submit the application if required.

‘Secrets And Lies’ Season 3: Cornell Might Be The Next Victim? Showrunner Talks About Possible Series Renewal

'Secrets And Lies' Season 3: Cornell Might Be The Next Victim? Showrunner Talks About Possible Series Renewal

After a mind-blowing season 2 finale, fans are wondering about the possibilities of “Secrets and Lies” season 3. In a recent interview, the show’s executive producer, Barbie Kligman, talked about what fans can expect from a potential third season of the mystery series.

The last episode of “Secrets and Lies” season 2 shocked fans as Kate’s killer was revealed to be Amanda. Apparently, Amanda got jealous after learning that Kate was pregnant, especially because her own infertility issues resulted in a divorce, only to know later that she was also pregnant.

In an interview with TVLine, Kligman said “Secrets and Lies” season 3 will be dependent on the network. “It really just depends on where ABC is and what the numbers are,” she said.

“Secrets and Lies” suffered a decline in ratings during season 2. The first episode of the second season only had more than 4 million viewers, which is fewer than the episode with the lowest ratings in “Secrets and Lies” season 1. The ratings further went down in the following episodes, as the first eight episodes averaged to 3.22 million viewers, almost half of the 5.61 million average of the first season.

Talking about Juliette Lewis’ character, Kligman hinted the possibility of Andrea Cornell ending up as the victim in “Secrets and Lies” season 3. “There’s a world where that could happen,” she said.

She further explained that the entire season might explore about who could have done the crime. “And given how many enemies Cornell has made over the years, there certainly wouldn’t be a shortage of suspects,” she added.

On the other hand, Lewis said she’s not sure of what’s in store for “Secrets and Lies” or if there will be a season 3. “The options are endless and really exciting, but I’m not sure what else to say or where ABC will even stand with us,” she said to Entertainment Weekly. She added that fans can only hope for the best for the series.

Bryant Young remembers ‘Colby’ in Hall of Fame induction speech

Bryant Young remembers 'Colby' in Hall of Fame induction speech

Bryant Young could have rambled on about former teammates and shared more inside stories, but he carved out 2 1/2 minutes of his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speech for a more meaningful reason.

Young, a four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle with the San Francisco, provided the most emotional moment of the festivities on Saturday in Canton, Ohio when he paid tribute to his son Colby, who died of cancer at age 15 in 2016.

“I’d like to let you meet Colby,” Young said. “Born in August 2001, Colby loved life. He had an infectious smile, many interests, including football. He was a happy kid. In Fall 2014, when he was 13, Colby started having headaches. A CAT scan revealed a brain tumor. … Five days later, surgeons removed a tumor and told us it was cancer.”

Colby Young initially recovered but the cancer later returned.

“Doctors tried immunotherapy, but it had spread too far, too fast,” Young said. “Colby sensed where things were heading and had questions. He didn’t fear death as much as the process of dying. Would it be painful? Would he be remembered? We assured Colby we’d keep his memory alive and continue speaking his name.

“On October 11, 2016, God called Colby home,” said Young, fighting through tears. “Colby, you live on in our hearts. We will always speak your name.”

Young played 208 games over 14 seasons (1994-2007), all with the 49ers. The first-round pick in 1994 out of Notre Dame had 89.5 sacks in his career.

Young was one of six players inducted Saturday, along with offensive tackle Tony Boselli, cornerback LeRoy Butler, defensive end Richard Seymour, the late receiver Cliff Branch and the late linebacker Sam Mills. Coach Dick Vermeil and official Art McNally also were inducted.

Butler called it a long wait for his induction after his standout career. He played 181 games over 12 seasons (1990-2001) with the Green Bay Packers as a second-round draft pick out of Florida State and picked off 38 passes in his career.

“When you play for the Green Bay Packers, a lot of doors open up,” Butler said. “When you win a Super Bowl, all the doors open up. When you make the Hall of Fame, football heaven opens up. Want to know why? It’s rare company.”

Seymour, who played 164 games over 12 seasons with the New England Patriots (2001-08) and Oakland Raiders (2009-12), was the sixth overall draft pick in 2001 out of Georgia. He had 57.5 career sacks and was on seven Patriots teams that won at least 10 games.

Boselli is the first Jacksonville Jaguars’ player to be inducted. The five-time Pro Bowler played 91 games over seven seasons (1995-2001) after he was the Jaguars’ first-ever draft pick, selected No. 2 overall in 1995 out of Southern California.

Branch, who died in 2019 at age 71, was a three-time Super Bowl champion and four-time Pro Bowler in 14 seasons with the Raiders (1972-85). He had 501 career receptions for 8,685 yards and 67 touchdowns.

Mills, who died from cancer in 2005 at the age of 45, played the first nine seasons of his 12-year career with the New Orleans Saints (1986-94). He finished with the Carolina Panthers (1995-97) and totaled 1,265 tackles with 22 forced fumbles, 20.5 sacks and 11 interceptions.

Vermeil went 120-109 in 15 seasons as head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles (1976-82), St. Louis Rams (1997-99) and Kansas City Chiefs (2001-05). His Rams won the 1999 season’s Super Bowl.

Vermeil’s biggest influence was a college basketball coach. When he coached at UCLA, he got to watch and learn from legendary John Wooden, long considered the best of his trade.

“I took every opportunity I had to spend time with John Wooden,” Vermeil said. “Yes, he’s coaching basketball, but when you watch him practice, the intensity and the discipline and the structure was there of a great football practice and a great football coach and it was so exciting and I learned so much from him.

“A philosophy he implanted in me in conversation, I think about it all the time. One time I was complaining about the players we lost in recruiting. He said sit down. I sat down. When John Wooden says sit down, you sit down. He says, ‘Now listen Coach, don’t worry about those players you don’t have. Just make sure you do a great job of making those who you have the best that they can possibly be.’

“And I’ve operated under that simple philosophy the rest of my coaching career. It is so true. So true. Gosh darn it, thank you John Wooden.”

McNally, 97, became the first official inducted into Canton. He started as an official in 1959, served as referee from 1960-67 and was supervisor of officials from 1968-1991. He oversaw the implementation of instant replay in 1986.
