USB Hub Not Working? Here’s How to Fix It

USB Hub comes in handy when charging multiple USB devices or increasing the number of ports on your computer. However, the device may stop working due to incorrectly configured settings, power surges, and outdated drivers/controllers.

Although the causes are different, simple fixes often solve the problem. Firstly, ensure the power cable (in a powered USB Hub) and all the attached peripherals are securely connected.

While you’re at it, we also recommend updating Windows and restarting the PC. If the USB Hub still doesn’t work, you can now go through the below solutions to fix it.

Table of Contents

Power Cycle the USB Hub

Sometimes, defective capacitors can disable the USB Hub. This could be why the connected peripherals have stopped working. To resolve this, we suggest power cycling the hub to recover from an unresponsive state:

  1. First, disconnect the USB Hub from your PC.
    disconnect usb hub from pc
  2. Then, remove all the attached peripherals from the USB Hub.
    remove attached peripherals
  3. Also, unplug the power adapter from its dedicated port. This only applies to the powered USB Hubs.
remove power cable from usb hub
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds before you reconnect the power adapter.
  5. Now, reconnect the USB Hub to your computer’s port.
  6. Finally, reattach the peripherals, and see if this solves your problem.
    reconnect usb hub to pc

Check Hardware Faults

Another common issue is damaged cables and ports. If you notice worn-out electrical wires from your peripherals, know that it’s defective and requires replacement. But if the devices are not working in just one of the ports, try using the device on an alternative one.

Moreover, if you have connected the hub to one of the front panel ports, a damaged USB header could also be responsible. In that case, we recommend a direct connection to your motherboard’s USB port. Also, you can get to the mainboard and plug the internal cable into a different header to see if this does the trick.

Dust and debris stuck in the ports can also cause frequent disconnection problems. In such a case, we recommend cleaning them well using short bursts of compressed airThen, you can dip a cotton swab in 70% isopropyl alcohol to remove the clingiest of dirt.

You can also try connecting your USB Hub to another PC to identify possible hardware faults. If the problem persists, your device is probably damaged and requires replacement. Otherwise, corrupted drivers or incorrectly configured settings could be responsible, which we will discuss further.

Update or Reinstall USB Controllers

The USB controllers are the device drivers that control how all the connected peripherals communicate with your PC. Among the different controllers available, the Generic USB Hub driver is responsible for managing the hub. Likewise, the USB Root Hub monitors how you’ve inserted and removed devices.

However, if you do not find these drivers in the Windows Device Manager, here’s what you can do:

  1. Use Windows + R to open the Run interface, and execute the below command to open the utility:
    devmgmt.msc
    devmgmt msc in run utility
  2. Now, right-click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers, and choose Scan for hardware changes. This can help detect USB devices.
scan for hardware changes usb controllers

In some scenarios, a defective device descriptor may cause the Device Manager to not recognize the driver. So, you may encounter the Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) error. In such cases, you can try updating and uninstalling the hidden drivers:

  1. In the Device Manager interface, expand View from the menu bar.
  2. Then, select Show Hidden devices.
    show hidden devices
  3. Now, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  4. Right-click on the grayed-out device driver, and choose Update driver.
    grayed out update driver
  5. In the new dialogue box, select Search automatically for drivers.
    search for usb hub drivers
  6. Repeat the same for all the other hidden drivers.
  7. If updating didn’t help, right-click on each driver and controller. Then, choose Uninstall device.
    uninstall usb hub driver
  8. Press the Uninstall button to confirm your action.
    uninstall button usb hub driver
  9. If uninstalling the hidden drivers didn’t help, kindly update or reinstall all the other controllers. To reinstall, delete the driver and restart your computer.

Update Chipset Drivers

If the chipset drivers are corrupted, the operating system may not recognize and communicate with your motherboard. This can eventually affect the USB Hub drivers. So, we suggest updating the corrupted chipset drivers on your PC:

  1. In the Device Manager window, expand System Devices.
  2. Look for a yellow exclamation mark on the chipset drivers. Right-click them in succession, and choose Update driver.
    update chipset driver
  3. Then, pick Search automatically for drivers.
    search automatically for chipset drivers
  4. You can also delete any problematic driver here. Then, restart your PC to reinstall them.

Enable External USB Port in BIOS

Some manufacturers have dedicated USB settings in BIOS. One of which is the External USB Port that’s responsible for detecting the connected USB devices on your platform. So, it’s essential that you enable this from the BIOS interface:

  1. First of all, restart your PC.
  2. Then, enter the BIOS using the boot menu key, depending on your motherboard. For demonstration, we have booted to Dell BIOS.
    bios setup
  3. From the left pane, expand System Configuration.
  4. Then, navigate to USB Configuration.
  5. Here, check the Enable External USB Port and click on Apply.
    enable external usb port
  6. Now, exit BIOS and once your computer boots into Windows, the USB Hub should start working.

Disable USB Selective Suspend

When you enable the USB Selective Suspend feature on Windows, the driver suspends the unused ports without affecting the used ones. If none of them receives a wake request, the connected peripherals may stop responding. So, we advise disabling the feature, and below are the required steps to do just that:

  1. Click on the Start Menu icon from the Windows Taskbar. Here, search for Control Panel and launch it.
    control panel from start menu
  2. Then, navigate to Hardware and Sound.
hardware and sound in control panel
  3. Move to Power Options.
    power options in control panel
  4. Click on Change plan settings next to your preferred power plan.
    change plan settings
  5. Now, select Change advanced power settings.
    change advanced power settings
  6. Once the Power Options window pops up, expand USB Settings.
  7. Here, select USB suspend setting and set it to Disabled. If you’re a laptop user, do this for both On Battery and Plugged In.
    disable usb selective suspend
  8. Hit the Ok button, and reconnect the USB Hub to see if it starts working.

Tweak Power Management

If your computer turns off the USB Root Hub device to save power, it may trigger unexpected issues. One of the many consequences is that the device may stop detecting or working. If that’s the case, you can try tweaking the power management:

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  2. Then, double-click on the Generic USB Hub. This should open its Properties dialogue box.
    double click generic usb hub
  3. Switch to the Power Management tab, and uncheck the Allow this device to turn off this device to save power option.
  4. Press Ok to save this setting, and check if the USB Hub starts working.
allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

Try Disabling Fast Startup

By default, the Fast Startup feature is enabled on Windows 11 to boot the PC much more quickly. But if the computer starts before all the connected peripherals get detected, the USB Hub may sometimes not work. So, we advise turning off this option to see if it resolves the problem:

  1. Open Control Panel and move to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  2. From the left pane, select Choose what the power button does or Choose what closing the lid does.
choose what the power button does or choose what closing the lid does
  3. Next, click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
change settings that are currently unavailable
  4. From the Shutdown settings section, uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended) and hit the Save Changes button.
turn off fast startup and save changes
  5. Now, restart your computer, and check if the connected USB Hub is recognized and working well.

Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

If you’re unable to identify the actual cause, running the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter is an excellent choice. This will examine common bugs and issues in your USB Hub and tries to fix them:

  1. In the Run interface, copy and paste the below command to open the troubleshooter:
    msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic
msdt exe id devicediagnostic in run
  2. Next, click on Advanced.
    advanced in hardware and devices
  3. Then, check the Apply repairs automatically option and hit Next.
    apply repairs automatically
  4. Wait for several seconds until the troubleshooter detects possible problems.
  5. Now, you should get the message, “Restart your PC to finish installing drivers and updates.” So, choose the Apply this fix option.
    apply this fix
  6. Hit Next to restart your computer.
  7. Once the computer reboots, it should recognize the USB Hub.

Reset or Flash BIOS

Any incorrectly configured BIOS settings can lead to hardware failures. If you remember changing such configurations, kindly revert them. Otherwise, it’s best to reset it to the default configuration. For demonstration, we’ve done this on MSI, but the steps should be similar on other motherboards too:

  1. Restart your computer and press the dedicated key to get into the BIOS. Ensure you do this before the Windows boots or when the manufacturer logo pops up.
  2. Navigate to the Settings section.
    msi bios settings
  3. Next, choose Save and Exit.
    save and exit in bios
  4. Now, select Restore defaults to reset the BIOS settings.
    restore defaults
  5. Press the Yes button to confirm your action.
    yes to reset bios

If you’re using a new USB Hub, an outdated BIOS could have prevented the computer from detecting it. Therefore, it’s best to flash a new one to add compatibility:

  1. First, open the System Information utility, and check the BIOS Version/Date field.
check bios version in system information
  2. Now, navigate to the manufacturer’s website to download the latest version.
  3. Insert a flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space and format it in the FAT32 file system.
    format flash drive in fat32
  4. Next, unzip the files to the flash drive and remove it from the USB port.
  5. Restart your PC and use the dedicated key to boot into the BIOS.
  6. Here, navigate to the M-Flash section.
    mflash in bios
  7. In the confirmation dialogue box, hit the Yes button.
    yes to enter flash mode
  8. Wait for several seconds until your PC enters the M-Flash mode. Here, pick the update file.
select the update file in mflash
  9. Proceed with the on-screen instructions to complete the BIOS update.
  10. Once your computer reboots, the USB Hub should start working.

5 Stealthy SEO Slip-Ups You Should Avoid

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is integral to any digital marketing strategy. It helps ensure your website is seen by the right audience and increases visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs). To maximize your SEO potential, there are certain basics that you need to be aware of so that you can avoid costly slip-ups. In this article, we will look at five common yet stealthy SEO mistakes many businesses make and provide tips on preventing them.

From keyword stuffing to not optimizing images, simple errors like these can result in severe drops in ranking and traffic. If you’re looking for a way to help your business succeed online, avoiding these pitfalls can ensure success with your SEO efforts.

Ignoring Mobile

It’s no secret that when it comes to SEO strategies, mobile optimization is key. Yet, too many businesses still fail to recognize the importance of optimizing mobile users. This “slip-up” could be costing them more than they think: not only in potential customers lost but also in rankings on search engine results pages.

When a website isn’t responsive—that is, when it fails to adjust its layout or content to fit the screen size of a device—visitors can become frustrated and quickly leave the site. This impacts user engagement metrics such as bounce rate and session duration, affecting page rankings over time. Additionally, Google has taken steps to reward sites optimized for mobile with higher placement in search results.

Poor Keyword Research

In the world of SEO, keyword research is essential to driving traffic to your website. However, you could miss out on valuable leads if you don’t do your due diligence in researching the correct words for your site and industry. This is slip-up number 2 in our list of 5 stealthy SEO slip-ups you should avoid.

One common mistake in keyword research is selecting keywords that are too broad or generic. These types of keywords may get a lot of searches, but they will also be highly competitive, and it won’t be easy to rank them on search engine results pages (SERPs). Instead, focus on selecting more specific and targeted keywords with lower competition levels yet still capture the right audience for your business.

Not Optimizing Images

Images contain valuable information that can help boost your website’s visibility in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages). When images are not properly optimized, they can hurt your SEO efforts. When it comes to optimizing your website for search engine rankings, not properly optimizing your images can be a costly mistake.

Before you upload any image to a web page, ensure you have taken the necessary steps to optimize it. This includes providing an accurate image description and giving it an appropriate filename. Additionally, you should use proper image formatting such as JPEG or PNG and resize the image so that it doesn’t take too long to load on a user’s browser window. Compress the file size so that its loading time is even faster. These steps will ensure that your images are helping rather than hindering your overall SEO performance.

Neglecting Backlinks

Backlinks are an essential component of search engine optimization (SEO). They help build credibility, increase visibility, and drive traffic to a website. Unfortunately, many organizations make the mistake of neglecting backlinks altogether. This can be a costly slip-up that can lead to diminished rankings or penalties from major search engines.

Organizations should prioritize building quality backlinks by connecting with other websites in their niche or industry. When posting content online, it’s wise to include high-quality external links that enhance the piece while also providing readers with more information on the subject. It’s also important to track these links regularly to ensure they’re still active and relevant. Additionally, link-building campaigns should be monitored and managed to ensure that only trustworthy websites are being linked with.

Skipping Title Tags

Title tags are essential to SEO, yet surprisingly, many website owners neglect them. Title tags are HTML elements found in the header of a web page that tell search engines what the page is about. Without this critical piece of information, it’s hard for search engines to determine how relevant and valuable your content is.

Failing to include title tags may result in lower rankings and fewer visitors than you would otherwise have if they were properly utilized. Additionally, having good title tags can help make your pages easier to find when someone searches for related terms or topics on Google or other search engines. Therefore, it’s essential to ensure that all pages on your website have unique and descriptive titles as this will increase their visibility and give them a better chance at ranking highly for relevant queries.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, SEO is essential for any business looking to succeed online and stand out. Make sure you conduct regular SEO audits, track your progress and review your content regularly for any potential mistakes that could harm your website’s rankings. Avoiding these five common SEO slip-ups ensures your website is ready to rank and attract target customers.

Remember, SEO isn’t a short-term solution; it’s an ongoing process requiring dedication and focus on the quality of your website.

Instagram Reels or TikTok – Everything You Need to Know

If you’re a marketer, influencer, or blogger, or perhaps journalist It shouldn’t come as it as a shock that social media are actively utilized for more than just enjoyment but also to promote. Promotions for products or ads were are now on these platforms quite a while in the past. Getting Instagram followers is easier than TikTok, because you can use Social Servicing Platforms.

In addition, to the previously proposed content placements for which they were proposed there is a third. Check out the best tiktok followers https://famoid.com/buy-tiktok-followers/ On August 5 the brother of TikTok became a reality on that day. Facebook, Instagram’s parent company Facebook launched its own version of the popular short-form video application. Instagram Reels is a brand new way to share clips lasting as long as 15 seconds (currently trialing thirty seconds!) in Instagram. Instagram application.

It’s true that Reels launched wasn’t unexpected after TikTok was so well-known. It was actually a reaction from Facebook because it’s the most downloaded application from the apps stores. It has over 800 million users across the globe. Additionally, the demographics of this platform is beginning to shift. While the users of TikTok were based on Generation Z users mostly, today, the percentage of Millennial is growing. Therefore, it was obvious that Instagram had made some far-sighted predictions.

Video duration

It’s initially small, but users noticed it was a hassle. If you’d like to upload more content and more, the Reel’s time-limits might not be enough, and may feel like it is limiting. However, as Instagram Reels is in the beginning stages of its development and we are hoping to make use of any feedback and in the near future, review the length of videos.

There’s a distinction between the two applications that play a vital role for influencers, brands, and marketers. Instagram Reels allow users to create a brief video that can be up to 15 minutes (30 seconds for lucky beta testers! ) While on TikTok you can upload 60-second videos.

Editing features

There’s no significant distinction between video editing software whether it’s Reels or TikTok however, the latter one is much better than the other on the subject. A lot of well-known filters are available on TikTok let users browse through a vast assortment of templates and effects. In addition, there are a variety of cool voice effects and voice instruments that can enhance your standard voiceover.

Source

On Reels, the collection isn’t as significant and the video effects available are much more limited. Prior to the creation of a video, users have to choose specific filtering options that are available in Instagram’s Instagram Effects collection, and they can’t make any changes by using their basic voiceover. The process is only just starting to be used for Reels and they can include any features users would need.

Analytics

Another area that could be improved to Instagram Reels is its analytics capabilities. There aren’t many details on this, as users are only able to view the number of comments, likes, and views. However, you gain access to all TikTok’s analytics when you are a Pro Account user. Analytical data on content and audience allow you to see your targeted people, and you can easily find their preferences and needs.

Additionally, on TikTok, it is possible to see the status of a video’s virility and also where the particular traffic source is. It also lets you see which the people who watched it has listened to. You can then decide the music background you want to use the next time.

Music possibilities

One of the biggest distinctions is the music feature. On TikTok users can access the entire TikTok Sound library. It’s an ideal platform for people who would want to make their music more popular products. When a piece of music becomes a popular background to videos with an enormous number of users, it could be successful. People begin to look for it, and then add that track to any playlist that is available. Instagram Reels isn’t yet equipped with music options and if you have to create a video using an accompanying song then you must create it in another place, edit it before uploading it to Reels.

Everyone is confident that this issue will be resolved shortly, because it might turn off new users and be the most significant disadvantage for the Facebook “child.”

Then, Reels, as well as TikTok, Do you think you are closer to making your decision?

Content and the audience

For a long time TikTok’s structure was kept a hidden. However, it was revealed it was highly customized to your interests and the Instagram Reels attempts to display only the best and top-rated content.

It’s extremely convenient since you can target and, for instance, offer tools for mechanics to someone who does some hand-crafts or loves fixing automobiles. Other people might be interested in working on furniture for the house or plumbing. Remember those who don’t use it often but from the time, any advertisements must be targeted to the right people who will be consuming it.

While the content of both boards is similar but their audiences differ. The content on TikTok is targeted at the Gen Z audience and their demographic is different from Instagram Reels’ (relatively younger). Therefore, if you’re trying to reach out to millennials and publish videos that will be in line with your own personal fashion, then offer Instagram Reels a chance.

Paid-for advertising

TikTok provides paid advertising however their advertisements aren’t as popular with small-sized companies. They began to offer In-Feed advertisements as well as Top View, Brand Takeovers Branded Hashtag Challenges, as well as Branded Effects.

For Instagram Reels, there’s no option to pay for ads to businesses and brands right now. However, it is possible to collaborate with bloggers and creators on the development of content for brands.
