Tom Pidcock admitted it was a “massive disappointment” to not end on the rostrum on the world cyclo-cross championships in Ostend on Sunday as Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel gained the rainbow jersey for the fourth time in seven years.

Pidcock, 21, battled again from a gradual begin to end fourth within the males’s elite race, simply seconds behind Belgian Toon Aerts. However he was unable to get near pre-race favourites Van der Poel and Wout van Aert on the sandy North Sea course. The 2 kings of cyclo-cross have between them now gained the final seven world titles.

“I felt good in the present day,” Pidcock informed Sporza afterwards. “Some laps had been good, some s—. I got here near Toon Aerts, however sadly not shut sufficient.” In an interview with British Biking, Pidcock added that he had been too tentative on the opening lap.

“I obtained a very good begin, however I simply didn’t commit so I went again a bit,” he stated. “Then within the first nook I used to be on the left and within the deep sand. I needed to get off and run a bit, so I used to be far behind and it took me some time to get going.

“On the final lap, I used to be actually one or two seconds behind him [Aerts] — I’d pulled again 12 seconds — however coming into the end he was in entrance of me so I wasn’t going to catch him.

“I actually might have been on the rostrum, so it’s a giant disappointment in that space. However in the long run… inside 4 or 5 years, nobody will know who was third, so it’s not that unhealthy now.”

Pidcock, who won Britain’s first cyclo-cross worlds medal last year, ending runner-up behind Van der Poel will formally step as much as WorldTour and be a part of Ineos on Monday. He plans to proceed to race cyclo-cross and mountain bike, concentrating on the latter on the Olympics this summer season, in addition to racing on the street.

“Total, I can look again on my yr of ‘cross with satisfaction,” he concluded. “It offers me confidence for the street season. I feel I will probably be even stronger subsequent season. Wout and Mathieu are 4 to 5 years older than me, so I’ve slightly extra time to develop. Hopefully, I can actually put them to the take a look at subsequent yr.”

Within the ladies’s elite race on Saturday, Britain’s Evie Richards completed seventh as Dutchwoman Lucinda Model took gold.
